Sustainable Fish
ABLE is a CEFAS approved Fish Farm.

ABLE was originally known as the 'Cardboard to Caviar' scheme as the project centred around raising Siberian Sturgeon in a closed-loop process which included waste cardboard bedding. The bedding was composted with worms, which were then fed to the fish.
While this process continues, the scheme has become much larger, now farming Tilapia, Koi Carp, Catfish and Sturgeon on the Wakefield site.
Waste fish water is recirculated using aquaponics: Channelling nutrient rich fish waste into hydroponic grow beds. The plants then harvest these nutrients (the fish waste) from the water so clean water can be recirculated back into the fish tanks.
We are currently establishing a hatchery to improve the genetic pool for our future fish stocks, this will be based at the ABLE Kirklees site.
In 2009, we were involved in CEFAS workshops to develop a sustainable aquaculture strategy for the UK.
