"99% of coffee ends up in landfill..."
Not if ABLE gets involved!
The latest idea to put a waste product to good use is using spent coffee grounds to grow mushrooms!.jpg)
With the help of our friends at Deli Central who can provide us with ample supplies of used coffee we intend to try to cultivate our own mushrooms in one of the outbuildings.
Because mushrooms require a sterile medium in which to grow, coffee grounds are ideal as the steam used in making coffee means that they are already sterile. The fact that the substrate is sterile also acts as a deterrent to worms which can be a problem in mushroom cultivation.
Returning to the subject of Deli Central, we would like to pass on our congratulations to them on reaching the final four in the Best Retailer of Regional Products 2010-2011 section of the Deliciouslyorkshire Awards.
