Environment
The regeneration of our former landfill site is a key goal of the ABLE project. Our philosophy is based on the belief that looking after our environment and increasing biodiversity is fundamental to growing good quality and genetically strong produce.
Our woodland and produce are organically grown (we don’t add pesticides or chemical based fertilisers) on rich soil derived from composted sludges.
Achievements on the site so far include:
- Production of a 3 km, educational, wildlife trail made from recycled plastic and recycled glass substrate.
- A reduction of CO2 emissions through tree planting, willow coppice and a hedgerow surrounding the site.
- We have 20 bee hives on the site. The bees help increase the biodiversity of plants and give us an added bonus of delicious Wakefield honey.
- We are currently planting an orchard and mixed woodland, species include oak, ash, beech, alder, chestnut, scotch pine, willow etc.
Future environmental goals include:
- Being self-sufficient for our winter fuel needs within the next three years.
- Continue to protect the wildlife and plant species we currently have onsite.
- Complete the ABLE woodland.
The ABLE Project's current environmental projects include: Tree planting, the Wildlife Project (funded by Biffaward) and Bird Watching. Download the Nature Trail Map for a full tour of the 34 Acre site or contact us for more information.
